Episode 33: Tong Tji with Ryan + 3030 + JCo with Alvin, Dimas, Khresna

Today I had lunch at Tong Tji (along Simpang Lima) with Ryan and his friend (whose name I forgot, sorry). After that, I asked him to bring me to… (Uh, I forgot the name of the place, but I’m sure it was near RS Kariadi, the hospital) to watch 3030 with Zaky and his friends, Iva and Kali, and Tika. 3030 is this laser light show + skit sponsored by Tri, one of the telecommunications companies in Indonesia. While the whole show looked cool was pretty funny (I assume so – I didn’t understand much cause it was all in Indonesian, hahaha!), it was basically a huge promotion-advertisement for the company and its new products/services. It was fun, I guess.

Iva and Kali went with some other friends for dinner, while I went to JCo Java Mall with Dimas, Alvin, and Khresna. Zaky didn’t come because he was busy (as always). Yesterday though, Zaky got into a motorcycle-car accident, so his bike was wrecked, so he took one of his friends’ motorcycles to get home. That meant I had to ride with Alvin, and Dimas with Khresna.

We spent about one-two hours at JCo, just hanging out. They’re really friendly! I also taught them a few Filipino words and sentences, and they taught me some other things too, like about Alvin’s home town, Batam Island. He even showed me pictures, and his place really did look pretty. A little while later, the guys brought me home. :)

Episode 32: Candi Gedong Songo

Today, I was awoken by a text from my host family telling me to sweep and mop the floor. Uh… =)))))) I did it. It was an interesting experience. HAHA A little while later, Ryan texts me, saying that he was going to bring me to a “green-y place”. At around noon, I got ready for another adventure. =))))

We went to Candi Gedong Songo, which was this huge park with some old temples in the mountainous area near Bandungan/Ungaran. At the entrance, we had to pay a fee. The really funny thing was that the fee for locals is about 6rb IDR, and the fee for foreigners was 50rb IDR. That’s so unfair! Good thing I look like a local, so I only had to pay 6rb IDR (but I had to keep my mouth shut until we were out of hearing ranger, hahahaha!)

I LOVED THIS PLACE. <3 <3 <3

I got really mad at the end though, because I didn’t know that we’d be hiking up a freakin’ mountain, so I wore my black leather flats… And by the end of the day, my feet were killing me. =)))) Before going home, Ryan brought me to this place for a different kind of Nasi Goreng – it kinda tasted like yellow curry. I didn’t like it much, hahaha!

Thank you for this day, and the awesome pictures, Ryan!

Episode 31

I did laundry today, and at around noon, I started getting ready for my first Bahasa Indonesia class with Miss Dani. (Take note that this was supposed to be my second, except I missed the first one because I got lost going to the first one. That was the day I spent exploring the city with angkots).

I learned a lot from the class! Bahasa Indonesia really is close to Filipino. I found a lot of familiar words. The thing is, they don’t usually put the “be” verb (am/is/are/etc), so I feel like the sentence is always incomplete. =)))

After the lesson, Ryan picked me up from the school because we were hanging out today. We got pizza from Pizza Hut, then went to his house for a movie marathon. A little while later, his mom comes home. She’s super duper nice! :’)

At around 7ish, I tell Ryan to bring me home. On the way home though, it starts pouring – it was raining cats and dogs, so we had to wait at the nearest gas station for the rain to stop. It was one of his friends’ birthdays, so when it stopped raining, Ryan said he wanted to drop by where his friends were having dinner before bringing me home, but what happened was we stayed with his friends until about 10ish. =))) His friends were nice and everything, but I definitely felt like an outsider. After that, Ryan brought me home.

Episode 30: Kudus + Fikri’s Dinner

We had to be at the big masjid along Simpang Lima at 7am to meet with the people who were supposed to bring us to Kudus. I got on an angkot, and a little while later, Kali hops on the same one, hahaha! Lucky. =))) We arrive at the masjid at around 7.20, and we find Naufal, Tika, and Iva there. (Arkan just dropped off the tarps). The people we were supposed to meet where running late, so we decided to have breakfast first at McDonald’s. I had my pancakes to-go, and when we went back to Tika (who was eating bubur ayam – kinda like arroz caldo), she said “Oh, let’s wait at McDonald’s instead”. =)))) So we just went back there. The people (who turned out to be three high school kids) came at 9am. Wow, Indonesian time. =)))

The car ride to Kudus took a little over an hour, and it was super hot. When we got to the school, we immediately changed and did the presentations. Because we were late, we had to rush things. The kids in the school were very nice (and they took tons of selfies with us), and were very interested in the whole presentation. After that, the OC for the event (the high school kids who were part of the English club or something) brought us to this room and fed us their traditional Kudus food. It was okay – it reminded me of Tinola, actually – but I thought it had to much ginger, so I couldn’t eat it. =))) After that, we just took more selfies with their OC. After a few more minutes, the guy who drove us to Kudus said that he was ready to bring us back to Simpang Lima.

When we got there, Iva Kali and I went to this, uh, makeup shop. (I don’t know what to call it. It was basically a huge store with all things girly and skin- and make-up-related). We stayed there for about an hour, because Fikri was going to have a farewell party of some sort, and that was about two hours later. We came up with a crazy idea – to walk from Simpang Lima to Giggle Box (along Jalan Diponegoro). According to Google Maps, it would take only 30 minutes, so we went for it. What Google Maps didn’t tell us was that the road’s uphill. =))) What was supposed to be a 30-minute walk became an hour-long death march, hahahaha! When we got there, we ate some really good food though, so no complaints. First decent burger I’ve had in a reaaaally long time. =))) After the dinner, Kali and I shared a taxi ride home.

Episode 29: HEAL Project + Banaran Kopi

Tika and I were at Jalan Pahlawan by 6AM for the HEAL Project's opening activities for Car Free Day. Since everyone was late (this "Indonesian time" thing is really annoying now), I just decided to join the people doing aerobic dancing in the street, which was really funny. :))) A little while later, some more people came, and we started the game. The first one was to draw a poster about healthy living. The second one, to promote the project, we had to go around Jalan Pahlawan and the nearby streets to take selfies with people while holding a #HEALPROJECT placard. The last game was to dance at Taman Kabe until we were sweating buckets. (Healthy living…) =))))
After that, we just went back to Jalan Pahlawan to chill with some of the other AIESECers. Some of them I already met at the CJLC, and some of them elsewhere, like Ryan, the funny Indonesian guy with the British accent (seriously, what is up with that?), and Edo, Kali’s buddy. When the others went to go have brunch, my OC told us to stick around because we were going to the coffee fields. I’ve been waiting for this trip for a while now. The thing is, because it was car-free day, Dini and Fifi shared a ride, so there weren’t enough motorcycles for us all to go (Dini and Fifi on one motorcycle, and Zaky on his), which meant that Iva Kali and I had to ride a bus to Banaran. The OC told us to get on a cab to the Banyumanik bus station, so Ryan called a cab for us.
The really annoying thing was when the three of us arrived, we still had to wait about 30 minutes until the OC met up with us. AAHHH INDONESIAN TIME. When Fifi finally came, she made us get on a bus.

Banaran Coffe (yeah, one E =))))) was a really pretty place! We had lunch in this park-playground area – we sat on a picnic mat on the ground and had some Indonesian food and coffee. After lunch, we got on the train (which was actually more like a jeepney hahaha) that went around the place. We got to see the really cool coffee plantation. The driver even gave us some coffee beans, haha! When the ride was finished, we decided to go around on foot. The place is huge. (And it was really hot – maybe around 40-45 degrees Celsius. Crazy, man). There were some incredible views, too. Before leaving, we bought some coffee from the restaurant to take home.

We got on another bus that dropped us off at Ada (the grocery in Banyumanik). Because Iva needed to buy a battery for her phone, we were supposed to go to CL Mall, but thanks to Zaky’s horrible know-how about public transportation, we got on the worst bus ride ever to Paragon. =))))) I swear, it’s worse than rush hour with the MRTs back home.

Zaky really is bad at directions, hahaha! We spent about an hour looking around the mall, and we couldn’t even find what we were looking for. In the end, we stayed at JCo until each one of us had to go home. Kali and I took a taxi home.

Episode 28: Goa Kreo

MONKEYS. I don't know what to say, except that I had a blast playing with some monkeys at Goa Kreo today! They were super funny. =))) AAHHH I wanna ho back there!! :)))) Thanks to Hara, Hara's sister, and Hara's sister's boyfriend for bringing me there. :) :) :) After that, we went to Tugumuda, and then had dinner somewhere kinda sketchy, hahaha! After that, Hara and I went to Cafe Coco Madeleine to meet up with some interns and AIESECers. I ordered All About Chocolate and now I'm probably an inch away from diabetes. =))) After that, Hara brought me to meet up with Tika, and now I'm in Tika's house. We have to wake up at 5am for the launch of the HEAL Project! :)
